A Doula who
is a member of WOMBS:
Will accompany the
client in labour, provide emotional and physical support. Suggest
comfort measures
as well as provide support and suggestions for the partner. Whenever
possible, the doula provides pre and postnatal support, including
explanation and discussion of practices and procedures, and
assistance in acquiring the knowledge necessary for the woman to
make informed decisions about her care.

Will not perform
clinical or medical tasks such as taking blood pressure or
temperature, foetal tone, vaginal examinations or postnatal
clinical care. WOMBS standards apply to emotional and physical
support only.

Will refer her client
to the appropriate professionals should the client have needs
beyond the scope of her doula role.

Will advocate for her
client’s wishes as expressed in her client’s birth plan. She
helps the mother incorporate changes in plans if and when the
need arises and enhances communication between client and
caregiver. Clients and doulas must recognize that the advocacy
role does not include the doula speaking on behalf of the client
or making decisions for the client. The advocacy role is best
described as support, information and mediation or negotiation.

Will make back-up
arrangements with another doula to ensure service to the client
if the doula is sick or unable to be reached.

Has completed all
requirements as set forth in the WOMBS requirements for
certification. This includes continuing education and
affiliation with related organizations with other labour support
providers.

Will maintain clear
and accurate records of each client encounter and the birth.

Will respect the
privacy of her client.

Will not discuss
personal and confidential information.
