WOMBS Doulas are committed to dedicating their time and energy to work with mothers coming from the poorest communities in South Africa. Part of becoming a Doula with WOMBS is undertaking to do a certain amount of work within the government sector and so all the women who have trained with our organisation will dedicate a number of hours each month in support of this. We have established good relationships with local government maternity services and we have special permission to come in and support whatever women are there. Whether it’s rubbing her back, finding her some water or helping with breastfeeding – we offer our services and expertise to women who are often there completely alone and with nothing more than the clothes they came in wearing. They are often young and terrified to be in such an unfamiliar environment and she may not completely understand what is happening with her body. Even when language is a barrier, the comfort and support of a caring birth partner can overcome this and lead to a much more pleasant birth experience for both mother and baby. Mother and Baby BagsAs an extension of the community work we already do, we also put together special bags for mothers and babies who come from the most underprivileged backgrounds in the country. How you can help: Please help us by donating funds to WOMBS so that we may purchase items to include in the bags, or if you are able to provide items then please contact us. We aim to hand out around 200 bags and we try as far as possible to ensure that they have the same items in each bag. What a bag consists of For baby -
